Concluding Sentence
After you become a master of writing good topic sentences, now it's time to learn a good concluding sentence. A concluding sentence is not necessary for every paragraph in a multi-paragraph essay. Nevertheless, for a single paragraph, especially a long one, a concluding sentence is helpful to the readers since it signals the end of the paragraph. Plus, it reminds the readers of important points discussed in a paragraph.
Purpose of Concluding Sentence
A concluding sentence serves three main purposes.
- It announces the end of the paragraph.
- It summarizes the main points discussed in the paragraph.
- It gives final comments on the topic.
There are many words and phrases to signal the end of the paragraph. They are as follows

Examples of Concluding Sentences
The following two examples demonstrate two different types of concluding sentences. In the first paragraph concluding sentence paraphrases the topic sentence. This means that the concluding sentence repeats the topic sentence but in different words.
Example # 1
Synonyms don't always have the same emotional meanings. For instance, the words 'frugal and sting' both mean careful with money. The word frugal has a more positive connotation, however, to call a person stingy is an insult. Likewise, a person wants to be aggressive but not pushy and slender but not skinny. Thus we should be careful when choosing words since many so-called synonyms are not really synonyms at all.
In the second paragraph, the concluding sentence summarizes the two main points of the paragraph. These two main points are not specifically stated in the paragraph.
Example # 2
Gold is a precious metal that is prized for two characteristics. First, gold has lustrous beauty that is resistant to corrosion. For this reason, gold is suitable for coins, jewelry, and ornaments purposes. For instance, Macedonian coins remained untarnished today as the day it was minted twenty-two centuries ago. Second, gold is useful to industry and science. For years it has been used in industrial applications. For example, gold is used in Astronaut suits. These suits protect astronauts outside spaceships. In brief, gold is treasured for its beauty and for its utility.
